This Month's Featured Artist: Brian Baker

Brian Baker

Fine arts has always been a strong influence in my life due to my grandmother Ruth Baker, an accomplished portrait and landscape painter. Her influence has set the standard in my work and a love for craftsmanship.

Growing up I grudged through curriculum course’s one must take for a diploma in the Ft. Wayne Community Schools and found art class was the most rewarding. My passion for sculpting landed me a job as a shop assistant for a local architectural stone carver, who after a year sent me to a shop in Florence Texas where I was able to get more experience learning the trade of carving stone. I spent nearly four years at Texas Carved Stone working full-time and finally to became a Journeyman Stone Carver.

During my free time in Texas I began teaching myself oil painting. Like with anything new, it wasn’t easy and was daunting at times when considering most of my paintings for the first two years were seen only by the trash collector. Though improved in 2005 when I began painting more portraits, and still-life and met my mentor Philip Trussell at a figure modeling session.. Philip, an Austin Texas painter and poet was in his early 60’s when showing me by example, what it is to be a painter.

Currently I live in Fort Wayne with musician and girlfriend, Allison Demaree and our four cats.

His work is hanging now and his opening reception will be Friday, March 14th.
